How Problem solving strategy of Student Tutoring Thornleigh benefits students

Problem solving is an ongoing process in which we try to discover the things unknown to us by using the things that are known to us. It is ability using which problems are identified and solved by using right skills systematically. Problem solving has become integral part of student learning. This concept is very effective in making students learn the concepts of Math easily. This is used in curriculum for students of all age groups including kindergarten to high school students.

The problem solving strategy

The problem solving strategy used for Student tutoring Thornleigh is the UPSL strategy. After long researches, the Cognitive Load Theory is implemented so that the steps of problem solving can be simplified. The steps used for problem solving are Understand (U), Plan it (P), solve it(S) and Look back and learn from it (L).

Understand: It is the understanding phase of a problem. It is important to list down the information given. The goals to be achieved are to be listed down too.

Plan: During this phase students identify the constraints of a problem. Then identification of different solutions to the problem is done. There may be one or more solutions for the problem.  Some of the problem solving strategies could be creating visual images, trial and error, creating tables, creating a systematic list, use a pattern etc.

Solve: The plan is implemented. It could be a single strategy or combination of many strategies.

Evaluate: It is important to evaluate the result. This phase is important as it helps the students in doing self-assessment. At this stage, it is checked if problem could have been solved in a different way. In case there is a mistake, problem solvers are supposed to learn from the mistakes.

The above structure of problem solving is used for Math Curriculum and help in making students more confident learners.

The Five C-Method

Another concept that makes Student tutoring st ives very successful in teaching students of all age groups effectively is the Five C-method. This method is the result of long research work and it helps the students in effective learning and performing better. The Five C’s are:

Clarity: The parents are given detailed report about the performance of their children. Four types of assessments are conducted to understand how the students are performing and same is communicated to the parents. The assessments are:

·        Diagnostic

·        Formative

·        Summative

·        Benchmark

Cognisance: In this stage, focus is on understanding of concepts. Once concepts are understood, going to the next level becomes easier. The focus is also on problem solving skills so UPSL strategy for problem solving is used. The teachers are trained and expert and curriculum is designed after lots of research.

Confidence: The aim is to build confidence in a student so that they become more competent in future.

Connection: The students are encouraged to participate in the classroom discussions with the teacher as well as other students.

Cultivation: Parents with clarity and students who are connected, engaged and confident and have solid understanding of concepts in English, Math and problem solving will reach beyond their full potential.
